Installed Google +1, realized it doesn’t work with Google Apps

Google +1 Logo BlueI’ve always been a bit confused when it comes to some services not working with Google Apps accounts. Take my Google profile that I had to fix with a separate “private” Google account just because I couldn’t log in using my Google Apps account that is associated with my business.

Why? It seems to be such a small thing to make the profile page work with Google Apps, it’s not like it is a technical marvel integrated with 20+ advanced services. It’s just a profile page with links and images.

So anyway today I decided to

myPhoneDesktop update v1.8.1 supports Motion-X GPS Drive and Mercury Browser

Noticed that myPhoneDesktop had an update waiting for me in the app store, seems that it now has enhanced support for the Motion-X GPS Drive and Mercury Browser. I use this app quite often, it is nice not having to enter for example phone numbers that are displayed on your screen manually on your phone, just highlight it and click ctrl+c+c and it will basically dial it for you. You can read my full review of myPhone Desktop here and below is the message I got from its author Alexander Krivov:

Google´s lack of personal support and why I’m still with them

Google Apps logoIt’s no secret that Google´s support is lacking in many aspects. Their customer relations rely heavily on their customers helping themselves and eachother. They have an extensive database filled to the brim with help articles and guides and that is all good, but sometimes it just isn’t enough.

If you have been with me for a while you know that I do love many of the products that Google put online and I rely on some of them every day. I have even taken it a bit further so that I am not only helping myself, I actually help and consult other people on how to use cloud and SaaS to help them make their daily chores less tedious and more effective.  I do this through my company NETRiK.se (shameless self promotion I know) and some external consultants here in Sweden. My focus lies on smaller companies and entrepreneurs, ranging from 1-10 employees.

99% of the time they end up in one of Googles own huge support databases filled with comments from 50 other frustrated users with the same problems…

I bump into issues with Google products at the very least on a monthly basis, with some of them falling into the small easily resolved category and with others

I have replaced Disqus with Livefyre comments

Livefyre square logo with black borderThe comments section below all of my articles have previously been powered by the Disqus comments system. It did what it was supposed to do, however, it looked a bit dodgy using the basic layout and their support when I needed it was downright…bad (I wanted to use a stronger word here, did you see that? ;) ).

I have been looking at Livefyre for quite some time before I decided to make the switch. The main reasons for switching to Livefyre are:

Google sharing and gmail auto-complete not working

Also available in this thread on Quora.

As the subject says sometimes it feels like the auto-complete feature in Google Docs and/or Gmail doesn’t really work and at times it can feel very random.

Google Apps logoI have encountered this problem far too many times and I have managed to narrow down my issues with non working auto-complete to a problem with running several Google Apps domains (and most likely with a second regular (non-apps) gmail account aswell). Here’s the skinny:

List of iPhone voice commands, iOS4

iPhone Voice Control

A list of voice commands for the iPhone and iOS4.

The other night it struck me that a voice command for telling me what time it is would be really neat for the iPhone. Since I use a headset most of the day and sometimes it is a hassle picking up the phone to check the time (when driving etc) and a command like this would make my life much easier.

I started my search in Cydia for a solution. The reason I started in this end and not in the App Store is the fact that I have recently added really cool apps that according to me should come standard with the phone, but they aren’t available through the App Store. I got an app that actually tells you who is calling and who is mailing you, for example now it says “Call from Erik Rudling before the ring signal. Extremely convenient when headset bound, now I know not to answer with my company and full name when friends or family calls, it always sounded a bit odd.

Wonders of the Solar System – It’s great!

Wonders of the Solar System, Professor Brian Cox observing a solar eclipse Eclipse in India

Wonders of the Solar System, Professor Brian Cox observing a solar eclipse Eclipse in India

Recently I have been watching all episodes of the series Wonders of the Solar System. It’s excellent! I want you to check it out! ;)

It explores the wonders of our solar system (duh!), planets, gravitation, the possibility of life on other planets and much much more. What makes this series stand out from the many other documentaries that I have watched is that the host of the show, Professor Brian Cox, explains all the strange and wonderful happenings in a way that most of us can understand.

He explains it showing us examples and by comparing environments on our own planet, earth, to those of the other planets. This makes it much easier to relate to what might be happening in our solar system. I have picked up alot of cool info that was new to me and also got reminded of stuff that I have known in the past.
